Criteria for choosing a writing retreat venue

If you don’t already have the venue chosen for your writing retreat, having a list of criteria for what you want in a venue will save you a ton of time when contacting potential places to hold your retreat.

A few things to keep in mind are:

  • The maximum number of guests you feel comfortable handling. Consider how many you can give attention to based on your skill level and comfort level with the services you’re offering.
  • The city/town or geographic area you want to hold your writing retreat.
  • The type of area: small town, beach, mountains, lake, in or near a city.
  • Do you want to rent a house through AirBnb, VRBO, or similar service? Or does using a B&B or small hotel appeal to you more?
  • How close you want to be to a train station or airport?
  • The kinds of spaces you’ll need for group activities.
  • The kinds of spaces you want for guests to explore and free write.

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it will get you thinking about the type of place you want to hold your writing retreat.
